The power of music to some is the life force that adheres many friends, families and
organizations together. That powerful spirit of music has for years been associated with the lively city of New Orleans. The Louisiana city is known for its food, magical connotations, the Saints, but mainly for its Second Line music. Traditional Second Line bands played after burials at funerals and at parades or special events. In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, many thought that the spirit of the vibrant city had seen its last day… not if the Voodoo Brass Band could help it.
The Voodoo Brass Band, a group of 8 artists, banned together to bring a taste of home to many of their displaced friends and family. The band was formed on November 24, 2005 under the shadow of NFO, an organization created to service the needs of New Orleans band members to University Marching Bands, playing their 1st performance at a private party to give a sensation to a group of people that enjoys the Mardi Gras. Since then the band began to play various gigs around Houston in appreciation of the city’s hospitality to New Orleans citizens. With the influences of hip-hop, reggae, R&B, jazz, and Street Brass Band Jazz under their belts, the myriad of styles enabled the artists to form a new style of brass band music. You may see this band in Houston as a regular at “The Vault” and a restaurant call Se’Vauge.
The majority of the Voodoo Brass Band are students at Texas Southern University and also are members of the Ocean of Soul Marching Band. The students manage to balance strenuous studies and a demanding band schedule with providing their new home with a sprinkle of the old. Though faced with the intense hardships the Voodoo Brass Band found that music was their cure for wounds that others thought would never be able to heal. The intended of the members is to complete their undergraduate studies, ands the lovely experiences of music comings.
